If you have watched the movie Spirited Away then you should recognize these cute little fellas right away. They’re called Susuwatari but most people know them as soots.
These soots were working in the boiler room in the movie and ate these colorful star shaped foods. I tried to recreate this scene on a cookie and ended up with these brownie cookies.

How to decorate these cookies
3 things are required to decorate:
- mini Oreos
- mini M&Ms
- royal icing (black and white)
The mini Oreos are used as the soots and the mini M&M’s are the little star shaped foods they eat.
The Oreos and M&M’s are placed on the cookies before baking. You can use as many Oreos or M&Ms as you like. Place them around the cookie as you please.
Once the cookies are out of the oven and cooled, you can decorate the rest of the cookie with royal icing. Use royal icing to draw on the eyes and arms for the soots.
How to make the brownie cookies
One of the best things about these cookies is how fast they are to make. There is absolutely no chilling time. Just mix everything together then bake!
- In a bowl, mix together an egg and brown sugar.
- Add in butter and chocolate. Mix until combined
- Add in the dry ingredients (flour, cocoa powder, and baking soda). Mix until combined
- Scoop out the batter onto a baking sheet
- Place on the Oreos and M&M’s
- Bake
